Google Nest Hub reivew

 Why did I buy?

  I got Google nest hub in 2018. There was not so many information on it back then.

The worse thing was it didn't support my mother language, Korean.

That means I had to speak in English of course, and many services were retricted.

 

Although it had demerit, I got this. Because it has display.

Having display is more useful than I expected. (I will say in how to use part)

There were alternatives, that had bigger sized display such as Lenovo,

but I prefered native product more.

 

One of attractions for me is non-camera included.

I love to make a smart home quite much, but there is the thing I never do.

Which is installing a camera in my house.

 

Probably people from camera company say it is the safest.

However I don't want to make any possibility to hack my privacy.

 

That's why I have only one camera in front of main door, and nothing in my house.

In that point of view, Google nest hub is very good choice for me.

 

 

 

 How to use

  Basically it has the same function as Google home speaker.

So I want to talk about what you can do with display.

 

1. Photo album

As you know, you don't use speaker always. You will use it only when you need.

In other words, speaker is doing nothing untill you call it.

 

Google nest hub is different, due to display.

It can show pictures from Google art or my Google photo.

It looks like digital photo album.

2. Media player

It can play not only music, but also video from Youtube and Netflix.

Only 7 inch could be not enough for you, but I'm quite sure that it is much better than holding a phone.

 

In my case, I put Google nest hub on the bed. 

I watched Youtube before sleep. (Phone is on the desk for charging)

3. Home control

Google is connected to smartthings. I can control devices with touch.

If I didn't have Google nest hub, there would be 2 ways. Voice command and app on a phone.

Now I have one more choice.

Honestly on/off control is used with IKEA Tradfri button. It is much more simple.

However it is not fully compatible with smartthings.

Some devices are not loaded from smartthings, so I can't not control them.

 

For example, I have Galaxy home mini that can control TV in smartthings.

But it doesn't appear in Google.

 PROS and CONS

 PROS

• 7 inch display, that can play video.
• Google native product
• Working with smartthings

 

CONS

• Smaller display than competitor's
• Partial services for some countries
• Not fully compatible with smartthings

 

 Should buy?

Today we have other options, Google nest max and Google nest hub gen2.

As I know Google nest hub gen2 has minor difference from gen 1.

 

If you are techy, absolutely go for gen 2.

But if you have gen1 already, well.. you could have same thought as I do. 

Not that necessary.

 

Regarding max, I will wait until it is on sale. (maybe blackfriday?)

For now, I'm satisfied with Google nest hub quite much.
